"America, Still the Open Door for Immigrants" with Prof. Michael White

  • NestGSV 425 Broadway Redwood City, CA 94063 USA (map)

For over 350 years, immigrants have come to America for all different reasons—to escape persecution, to build new lives, and to find a haven in the land of the free. “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” asserts The New Colossus, the sonnet by Emma Lazarus, that’s mounted inside the lower level of The Statue of Liberty. “I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Join the Brown Club of Silicon Valley and Professor Michael White as we ask whether America is still the Golden Door for immigrants. Inevitably, immigration is a controversial topic; and right now, America is in the midst of another round of debates about immigration. Professor Michael White, an expert on all aspects of immigration, will share his views on the contemporary controversy. Professor White will draw on research that allows us to explore the experience of immigrant assimilation, both during the Ellis Island era and today.

Brown Professor of Sociology Michael White  is a terrific speaker on the topic of immigration and he was just named a fellow at the American Association for the Advancement of Science and will be formally inducted at the AAAS annual meeting in San Jose, CA on the morning of Saturday, Feb. 14th.
